Jan and Noel from Slumberworld, sat down with the Geelong Addy to talk about why so many Geelong residents are choosing to buy locally.

Tell us about Slumberworld

Slumberworld is a Geelong family-owned business that has been supplying to local residents for many years. All of our mattresses are handcrafted using only the highest quality Australian materials – and we cater for every comfort level. We believe it is imperative that we continue to support Australia manufacturing and that is why we only source Australian materials for our mattresses. The vast majority of our beds and bedroom furniture are also made in Australia.

Why is a good mattress important?

We spend almost one-third of our lives in bed – that probably says it all. It is so important that we don’t sacrifice our sleep and put up with a substandard mattress that is uncomfortable, makes you hot or is just too old and has started to “dip”.

So, what makes a “good” mattress?

Although people will try to tell you otherwise, there is no scientific consensus on what makes a good mattress. Ultimately, it comes down to you – what feels comfortable and what you can afford. However, you must have full body support from head to toe. The “ideal mattress” has a strong support throughout its spring system, and then its comfort comes from the different recipe of foam. It is vital that you know what is inside your mattress. This is probably what people enjoy most about the Slumberworld experience; we often take our customers on a tour of our mattress factory when they visit our Grovedale showroom. You can literally watch a mattress get made and speak with one of our mattress specialists.

Do you make custom mattresses as well as “standard” mattresses?

Absolutely – in fact, we specialise in custom mattresses. We can design and manufacture caravan, truck or boat mattresses in any size and for every comfort. We think you should sleep as well on the road as you do in your bed at home. You should never compromise on comfort, especially when you’re supposed to be on holiday!

Do you sell beds as well?

We have more than 50 beds on display at our showroom in Grovedale. This includes timber, upholstered and iron beds (90 per cents of which are Australian made), electronic adjustable beds, tubular, bunks and kids beds. We also have a huge range of Manchester on display, including mattress protectors, underlays, pillows, pillow covers, doonas, doona covers, sheets, linen and more.

Do you deliver?

Yes – anywhere! We are located on Torquay Rd in Grovedale, which means that we are in the ideal spot for our customers. We can have your mattress to you on the same day your order it to any location in the Greater Geelong region.

And finally, how has Slumberworld managed with Covid restrictions over the past 18 months?

Like all businesses, Covid has certainly presented us with some new challenges. However, we’ve had great support from our local community. We have a great website and are always available by phone or email to assist with any inquiries people might have – even when our doors might be closed. For the most part, we have been able to supply our customers with their mattresses/bedding requirements via non-contact delivery and contactless pick-up throughout the pandemic. We have also benefited from the fact we already only sourced Australian materials for all our mattresses. This meant that we were not relying on international supply chains and could deal with our suppliers directly here in Australia.
